Built by a landlord who got tired of spreadsheets
Basis wasn't born in a startup incubator. It was born in January, at a kitchen table covered in bank statements, with a CPA deadline two weeks away and a spreadsheet that hadn't been updated since March.
The landlord problem
I've been a real estate investor and landlord for years. Managing rental properties is rewarding, but the financial side — tracking every expense, categorizing transactions across properties, keeping receipts organized, and generating reports for tax season — is a grind.
Every January it was the same ritual: download a year of bank statements, open a spreadsheet, and spend an entire weekend manually sorting transactions. Which property was that Home Depot charge for? Was that utility bill for the duplex or the condo? Where's the receipt for the plumbing repair?
I tried every property management tool I could find. They were either built for property managers running hundreds of units, or they were basic expense trackers that didn't understand how landlords think about money. None of them could just take my bank statements and figure it out.
The engineering solution
With 15+ years of software engineering experience, I knew this was a solvable problem. The data is all there in your bank statements — it just needs to be parsed, categorized, and organized. That's exactly what AI is good at.
So I built Basis. The core idea is simple: your bank statements are the source of truth. Upload them, and Basis's AI does the rest — extracting transactions, categorizing expenses, matching receipts, and generating the exact reports your CPA needs.
Basis learns how you categorize things and gets better over time. It understands that landlords think in properties, not just categories. And it's built to handle the January rush — upload a full year of statements and have your Schedule E ready in under an hour.
What we believe
- 01Bank statements are the source of truth. Everything else — receipts, credit card statements, invoices — is supporting evidence. Basis is built around this principle.
- 02AI should do the boring work. You shouldn't spend your weekend categorizing transactions. Basis handles the tedious part so you can focus on your properties.
- 03Built for landlords, not property managers. You don't need tenant portals, maintenance ticketing, or lease management. You need your expenses tracked and your taxes done.
